About Cambridge Audio Alva TT Turntable
In homage to the genius of Thomas Alva Edison, the Cambridge Audio Alva TT Turntable tackles a problem that many people encounter in their home – where on earth can I put the turntable?
You see, turntables typically output very low level signals – think 5.5 mV (millivolts) if your turntable sports a cartridge like the very popular Ortofon 2M Red. This level of signal will not survive long on a cable which is why turntable leads generally max out at about 1.2 metres. CD Players or line level sources, by comparison, have an output (depending on the music) of anywhere between 200 mV & 2000 mV (2 Volts). That means the output of a turntable is, at best, around 40 times lower than a line level source. You can see why turntables need a phono stage to raise the output to a useful level (phono stages also provide RIAA equalisation but that’s a discussion for another day). It also means that turntables need to be fairly close to amplifiers, especially amplifiers with a built-in phono stage.
But Turntables are not that easy to accommodate in a modern home, where discrete is the name of the game and trying to sit a turntable on top of your sleek cabinet, squeezed under the TV etc is never going to be a good look. And hiding a turntable in a cabinet is always a pain, with hinged lids not playing well with confined spaces.
So, doesn’t it sound nice to be able to site your turntable out of the way, maybe near the listening seat or in an adjacent room? With the Cambridge Audio Alva TT, which can output hi-res audio via Bluetooth aptX HD, that’s exactly what you can do. All you need is either a standard Bluetooth connection, which is provided in every current home theatre receiver and many stereo amplifiers, or if you want to take full advantage of Lossless Hi-Resolution sound, a Bluetooth aptX HD connection which is featured on the Cambridge Audio Edge A & Edge NQ and a growing number of other products including the NAD C 658 Preamp/Music Streamer & the Bluesound Node 2i Music Streamer (and other Bluesound 2i models).
There is also the exciting option of streaming music from the Alva direct to B&W PX or PSB M4U 8 Headphones which just happen to be aptX HD capable. How wonderful to be able to wander around your house or out on the deck whilst listening to hi-res music streamed direct from your turntable. Old tech meets new, in an amazing way. Who knew vinyl could be soooo convenient.
Alva TT, Just Add Vinyl: You’ve spent years building your record collection. You’ve dedicated weekends to searching for hidden gems in record stores and carefully curating your discoveries. You worked hard, because you love music. Cambridge Audio worked hard creating Alva TT, all for the love of music.
The World’s First Bluetooth aptX HD Turntable: Bluetooth aptX HD liberates your record player from the hi-fi rack. With the freedom to place Alva TT anywhere you like, your records are invited into the lime-light. Your music can be streamed from Alva TT to any Bluetooth receiver at up to 24bit/48kHz Hi-Res, which means you’re guaranteed an authentic vinyl experience, wherever it’s placed.
Integrated Phonostage: Alva TT’s custom designed, integrated phonostage simplifies the physical connection - removing the need for extra boxes in your set-up. This phonostage builds on the success of Cambridge Audio’s award-winning, 5-star, standalone pre-amplifiers, the Alva Solo and Alva Duo, reducing unwanted noise while preserving the characteristic warmth of your vinyl.
MC Cartridge Pre-Installed: The cartridge on the Alva TT is pre-installed. There’s no tricky set-up needed, and it’s perfectly matched to the other components in the turntable. Cambridge Audio opted for a High-output Moving Coil (MC) cartridge with an exposed cantilever design. It reduces unwanted resonance and vibration, delivers high levels of gain and outstanding musical detail during playback.
Protect Your Records & Turntable: Your records are your prized possessions, so Cambridge Audio include a detachable dust cover with the Alva TT to protect whatever you’re spinning.
Direct Drive: Rather than go for a Belt Drive system with the Alva TT, Cambridge Audio’s engineers opted for a medium-torque Direct Drive. Over time, the elastic used on a Belt Drive turntable can stretch and will need to be replaced. As a result of this wear, Belt Drive turntables traditionally have a less accurate playback speed than their Direct Drive cousins. This isn’t a problem on the Alva TT – it has just 0.06% Wow and Flutter. This means far better pitch stability – particularly during longer, more sustained musical notes.
Innovative POM Platter: Complementing the Direct Drive motor, the platter on the Alva TT is both dense and heavy. It’s made from Polyoxymethylene (POM), a high-tech engineering thermoplastic used in precision parts requiring high stiffness and excellent dimensional stability. The weight of the platter, coupled with the medium torque Direct Drive motor, ensures excellent speed stability during playback of your records.
British-Made Single Piece Tonearm: The Alva TT uses a classic British-made one-piece tonearm (hint – it’s made by Rega). There are no joints, giving it the best possible grounding for the cartridge and offering extremely low friction. It’s designed to retrieve the maximum amount of sonic detail from the cartridge and therefore your records.

So, a jack of all trades turntable the Alva TT certainly is. But it seems to be the master of a fair few things as well. With it’s direct drive motor, pre-installed high output MC cartridge, built-in phono stage, Bluetooth aptX HD wireless streaming and a top notch British built tonearm, the Alva is ideally suited to take its place in a thoroughly modern, 21st Century system. Not bad for technology originally invented by Thomas Alva Edison in 1877.
