About Cambridge Audio SX60 Standmount Speakers
And that really is easy to say and not so easy to do at this price-point. So how have they done it? Basically by concentrating on the elements that make for good sound rather than cosmetics. The SX-60 don't look fancy with their straight-edged MDF cabinets wrapped in imitation dark walnut vinyl. They’re solidly built and the level of finish is fine, if a bit basic. There’s a 25mm dome tweeter, a 165mm mid/bass driver and a front-firing reflex port and, round the back, a single set of heavy duty speaker terminals.
Drivers: In selecting the drive units for the SX60, Cambridge Audio has put sound quality ahead of all other considerations. A silk dome tweeter gives the ideal combination of crisp detail with a smooth refined sound - the ideal compliment for many budget amplifiers. Matching this is a custom-designed woofer with a treated paper cone, a material that gives the SX60 speakers a fast, responsive sound with excellent bass timing.
Powerful Bass Response: Using a larger cabinet and woofer cone than the smaller SX50, the SX60 is ideal for larger rooms, or for when a more dynamic sound is required. Bass reaches down to a lower depth and the presence of sound is greater, for a more immersive musical experience.
Rigid MDF Cabinet: Designed to minimise standing waves, the rigid MDF cabinets help further in producing a clean, accurate sound. For a well-balanced bass, even at lower volume levels, the SX60 speakers are front-ported. Placing the speakers close to a rear wall or use them in a smaller room? Then dampen the ports with the provided foam inserts, for a sound more attuned to the room.
Designed With Attention To Detail: To get the best sound, every part of the SX60 has been reviewed. The drive units, for example, are not only recessed but also benefit from hidden fixings. This doesn't just look good, it also promotes better sound-staging for a more accurate rendition of the music. The cable terminals are chunky enough to accept thicker speaker cables or banana plugs and are also gold-plated for a lower resistance connection.

"The SX-60s catch our attention straight out of the box. These speakers are confident and full of energy. If you’re after an upbeat sound, you’re in for a treat: put on a bit of House of Pain and there’s enough bounce to make you really want to jump around...The Cambridge Audio SX-60s are good speakers. If you’re after a bold, upbeat sound, you can’t go wrong." - What Hi-Fi
About Cambridge Audio
For Cambridge Audio, life began in the swinging sixties, 1968 to be exact. This was a decade when British bands began to enjoy unprecedented global success, British studios led the way in recording techniques and British manufacturers started to make the best hi-fi equipment in the world, to replay music as naturally as possible. This sound has become recognised as the ‘British’ sound and Cambridge Audio was there at the beginning. Although some of their products are very reasonably priced, don’t assume they are not good. In fact Cambridge Audio set the pace when it comes to value-for-money and the SX-60 speakers are in that category.
Our Take On The Cambridge Audio SX60 Speakers
High quality sound through attentive design, the Cambridge Audio SX60 speakers make great music at a keen price which is not much above the really basic entry level gear. The speaker is truthful to the music, reveals detail and captures the harmonic structure of the music, whether a solo or large orchestral works. They don't handle a lot of power so they're not perfect if you intend to "crank" your music from time-to-time. But, if you have a small room and what nice, smooth and detailed sound then the SX-60s need to be on your short list. Yes, you can sit them on a shelf but they're really designed to sit on speaker stands. See below for some recommendations. We’re pleased to say these speakers are quite surprisingly good performers.
