Toroidal Power Transformer For Clean, Accurate And Absorbing Sound.

High Quality Customised Components. Dedicated Phono Input.

The Marantz PM8006 builds on it's predecessor - the PM8005 - with some neat new features whilst still maintaining all the sonic qualities. This fully discrete current feedback integrated amplifier is perfect for consumers wanting both excellent music quality and flexible operation.

Overview

The PM8006 offers a powerful 2 x 70 Watts into 8 Ohms, while the symmetrical circuits ensure perfect image balancing. To guarantee a totally unique audio experience, Marantz designers have shaped and optimised the power handling characteristics and redesigned the large double shielded Toroidal transformer’s circuitry to optimise bandwidth power. The result is a current feedback amplifier with a massive energy reserve to drive even the most demanding of speakers with absolute ease. To further guarantee best sound quality, the PM8006 has current feedback HDAMs, as well as a triple-layer bottom plate to help eliminate vibration. The PM8006 also provides source-direct mode for the purest audio signal and Phono MM to enjoy your vinyls. It's audio heaven.

Discrete Output Stage: Of course, Marantz have retained the pre-amp and power-amp sections (internally) that exclusively feature discrete components – not a single IC in sight of the signal path. That’s because specially selected single components not only outperform ICs in quality, they also make it possible to refine the sound in much more detail, resulting in more clarity and transparency. Also retained are all of the original features - such as four-line audio inputs plus a separate phono input for a dedicated Turntable, two-pairs of gold-plated speaker connections with the convenience of bi-wiring. Of course you would be lost without a remote handset so it is included!

Clean, Dynamic Power: The PM8006 has the Marantz signature sound and knows just how to deliver warm, dynamic sound to your speakers. The relatively on paper conservative 70 Watt stereo power rating per channel is generated by a high-current power supply that features a low impedance toroidal power transformer with high-current and custom designed storage capacitors. That allows this amplifier to handle the heavy demands of even 4 Ohm speakers as well as dynamic peaks in music. Plus, the output stage utilises current feedback circuitry — first developed by Marantz — to ensure clean playback with minimal distortion while driving both easy and difficult loads.

Power Amp Direct: Power Amp Direct or as some call it Home Theatre Bypass, extends the flexibility of the PM8006 for use within a stereo set or as a power amplifier within a surround sound set up. With Power Amp Direct switched off, it acts as a normal integrated amplifier for enjoying perfect sound quality in a stereo set up. With Power Amp Direct switched on, it uses the power amplifier for driving the front left and right speakers within a surround sound set up, using the surround channels from your A/V receiver. What’s more, it does all this with a single push of a button, without changing wires. The Power Amp Direct can also be used for a stereo bi-amping set up.

Marantz Musical Phono EQ: For many years, Marantz integrated amplifiers have featured high-quality phono stages, but now the company takes its commitment to vinyl to new levels with the Marantz Musical Phono EQ stage, launched in the PM8006 amplifier. This unique technology, simplifying the signal path in the phono stage for optimal sound quality, underlines the company’s commitment to the very best playback of all music sources, be they digital or analogue. Marantz Musical Phono EQ uses two-stage amplification, allowing less gain per stage, for lower distortion. Of course, being a Marantz design it uses the company’s HDAMs, but here they’re combined with JFETs (junction gate field-effect transistors) in the input stage, giving a high input impedance. This allows the deletion of the AC coupling capacitors previously used providing a simpler signal path for the tiny output from a phono cartridge, improving signal purity.

Marantz has also rethought the re-equalization process within the phono stage, a fundamental part of vinyl replay required to compensate for the limitations of the format. In the Marantz Musical Phono EQ stage this re-equalization is split into passive and active sections, for more accurate equalisation: the RIAA correction is carried out within an HDAM, while amplification is in the hands of a high-quality op-amp, running in Class A mode for minimal distortion, and delivering a clean and open sound. With Marantz Musical Phono EQ there’s no need to consider upgrading the PM8006 with offboard phono stage: as part of Marantz’s commitment to optimising playback of all format, be they digital or analogue, the amplifier already has premium-class phono capability built-in.

Heavy-Duty Binding Post Speaker Terminals (A/B): Equipped with two set of speaker outputs, the PM8006 can drive two pairs of speakers or it can be connected to one pair of bi-wiring compatible speakers, with one set of terminals for the low range drivers and the other set connected to the high range drivers. These heavy-duty, binding-post speaker terminals are made of brass with a thick silver plating for the best possible contact with your speaker cables. The main speaker output terminals are mounted lower, and thus closer to the main circuit board, to reduce the signal path. The binding posts will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG) and single banana plugs.

Our Take

First look at the PM8006, one may feel that this is a lot of money for a 70 Watt stereo amplifier. That could well be the case if compared with the general run of the mill mass-market amps or just as a stereo amp. Firstly, the PM8006 knows just how to deliver warm, dynamic sound to your speakers as per the Saul Marantz 'signature' sound. The 70 Watt stereo power rating only tells part of this amp's story. Those 70 Watts per channel are ultra-conservative and generated by a high-current power supply that features a toroidal power transformer with high-current storage capacitors. That allows the 8006 to handle the heavy demands of speakers when they drop down around the 4 Ohm mark as well as having enough in the 'tank' to handle dynamic peaks in your music. One thing to remember though is speaker impedance. If you are using only one pair of speakers, then anything between 4 Ohms and 8 Ohms is fine. However, if you plan to connect a second pair of speakers and run them simultaneously then BOTH must be 8 Ohms. In short, the PM8006 is your proven and excellent bridge to the future.
