About The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO Turntable
The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO is now surely the crème de la crème of sub $1K turntables. With a heavier damped steel platter, better motor suspension, height adjustable metal feet and electronic speed change (!) the Debut Carbon EVO is a fabulous improvement on a certified classic. Oh, and there is also now a selection of Satin finish models for those of us who are, er, dusting challenged. Nice!
The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO turntable was inevitable. Owner Heinz Lichtenegger is one of the most committed and energetic people in all of audio and there was no way he was going to leave the Debut Carbon alone without finding some meaningful way to improve it. And guess what, he has done exactly that with a number of very tasteful upgrades that further cements this turntable as one of the very best in its price range, and maybe a price range or two above.
The Debut History: From the middle of the 1990s, only a handful of years after Pro-Ject Audio Systems was founded and right at the peak of CD’s popularity, they could already see the growing number of people missing analogue music. In 1998 Heinz Lichtenegger and his UK distributor and long time friend, Laurence Armstrong, were sitting together dreaming of a record player that would make analogue sound accessible to more people. They wanted a new model that could deliver as close to high-end sound as possible, but at a price that a new younger generation could afford. Thanks to their dear friend and Pro-Ject’s original product manager, Jiri Kroutil, within only a few days they had a sample and the Debut was born.
Today, after more than 20 years, the Debut is one of the best-selling products in the history of hi-fi with close to 1 million units sold. As it made listening to vinyl an affordable option for music lovers, with its minimalist aesthetic and premium finish options it also made analogue fashionable again. Through the years Pro-Ject constantly improved the formula, moving with technologies and fashion trends. In the early 2010s, the Debut Carbon gave new life to the ongoing Debut revolution and now it is time for the next generation.
The Evolution: The Debut Carbon is already nearly the perfect turntable, especially considering the price tag and the materials used. But Pro-Ject has done a lot of research to make the Debut Carbon even better, but their main objective has not changed over the years. They still want to build an affordable high-performance turntable that not only looks incredibly luxurious and modern, but also features great sound quality.
The Debut Carbon EVO focuses on the core aspects that make a turntable sound great. Technically correct design - expert craftsmanship - handmade in the EU. This turntable is built to last you a lifetime!
Additional features that might negatively impact the overall audio performance or longevity are left out. At this level of sonic performance, it is always better to opt for a separate phono stage. If you want Bluetooth connectivity or a USB interface – Pro-Ject offer a broad portfolio of components at different performance levels to suit your budget.
Damped From The Inside: The previous metal platter was already heavier than anybody else‘s on the market, but metal platters inherently have a disadvantage: resonance. Pro-Ject’s TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) technology now helps to damp the resonance completely and also increases the weight to 1.7 kg. Because the TPE is mounted to the inside of the platter‘s rim, the moving mass will also create a flywheel effect. The result is almost noiseless operation with less wow and flutter.
The Perfect Stance: The old Debut Carbon had just one real drawback which Pro-Ject definitely wanted to improve on the new EVO model. Until now the Debut series was shipped with 4 dampened plastic feet. The new Debut Carbon EVO uses 3 height adjustable heavy-duty metal feet to ensure level positioning on every surface. By using only 3 feet they have been able to increase the stability on uneven surfaces, because a perfectly level turntable is essential for real high-end sound.
Redesigned Motor Suspension: The Debut Carbon EVO features Pro-Ject’s newly designed motor suspension. The motor in a turntable always vibrates, that’s just normal. As the cartridge and stylus are very sensitive, these vibrations can be transferred through to your speakers and cause mechanical noise. That is why it is important to suspend and decouple the motor from the plinth.
Pro-Ject’s old suspension worked perfectly well almost all the time, but they have improved the old design to consistently reduce motor vibration transmission to almost zero. They have drawn on their technological experience gained over the years and used damping techniques from their high-end turntables and incorporated them into the Debut Carbon EVO. By blending advanced TPE damping and high-mass sandwich construction they were able to come up with a new motor and suspension solution for the Debut Carbon EVO that far exceeds the effectiveness of the previous solution.
Electronic Speed Change!: One of the biggest bug bears with entry level manual turntables is the need to change the speed manually by moving the belt from one pulley to another – a dangerous activity late at night after a glass or two of red. So, as a result of customer feedback, probably in the wee hours via badly spelled tipsy emails, the Debut Carbon EVO has a discrete built-in electronic speed control to select between 33⅓ & 45rpm. This is particularly relevant these days as more and more quality vinyl reissues are pressed at 45rpm in order to deliver superior sound quality.
Besides being able to effortlessly change replay speeds with the push of a button, the playback speed is electronically controlled with the utmost precision, which results in the most accurate and stable speeds. With the included 78rpm round belt you are also able to listen to your shellac record collection. Just change the stylus to an Ortofon 2M 78 (optional extra available here), install the round belt and you are ready to enjoy your music. The speed control switch has been moved to the bottom of the plinth, to keep the clean look the Debut is known for. You wont find any button, switch or printing on the plinth, which keeps the aesthetics clean and luxurious.
From The Record To Your Amplifier: The new Debut Carbon EVO features the proven 8.6‘‘ one piece Carbon Fibre tonearm design. In combination with the premium Ortofon 2M Red cartridge the super stiff, but lightweight tonearm delivers insane sound quality with a convincing sound stage. The one-piece arm and headshell design prevents unwanted resonances and offers a solid physical bond to the cartridge.
Compared to other digital and analogue music sources, the signal coming from a turntable cartridge is very sensitive and low in level and cheap RCA cables do not provide the sound quality required for a clean phono signal transmission to the amplifier. To guarantee the perfect connection to your amp, all Pro-Ject turntables come with a high-quality RCA phono cable. The ‘Connect It E’ is a semi-balanced, low-capacitance cable, with superior shielding and superior sound quality.
Time For Evolution: Pro-Ject have taken their most popular turntable design and improved every aspect of it. The result is an incredibly refined product.
The heavy and solid MDF plinth with new 8x hand-painted finishes looks and feels better than ever before. The extensive range of finishes has been carefully chosen to reflect current trends and customer fashions. The Debut Carbon EVO continues to offer the timeless traditional high-gloss black, white and red finishes and their classic real-wood walnut veneer. But they have gone a huge step further by offering completely new, unique, trend-setting and beautifully realized satin signature finishes in 5 different variations. These are available in a wonderful colour palette including satin black, satin white, satin fir green, satin golden yellow & satin steel blue (sure to be a winner).
The new platter, motor-suspension, speed control and height-adjustable feet are small details when taken individually but as a whole they add up and result in a new Debut that does not only sound better than before, but also looks and feels better and more impressive than any Debut ever did, by a long shot.
Again, Pro-Ject have set the bar, for an affordable high-performance turntable that also looks and feels incredibly luxurious, higher than ever before.
Our Take On The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO Turntable
We always liked the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon. It was a solid, reliable performer with a great carbon fibre tonearm, a weighty platter and good looks care of its gloss or walnut finishes. Well, Pro-Ject have just upped the ante and delivered a new version that is, in several key dimensions, even better than it’s predecessor. With a heavier damped steel platter, superior motor suspension, height adjustable metal feet and electronic speed change (!) the Debut Carbon EVO is a fabulous improvement on a certified classic. And don’t forget those wonderful new signature satin finishes that include fir green, golden yellow and steel blue for goodness sake! They promise to make all us ‘dusting challenged’ folk very happy indeed. The best just got better.
