About The Wharfedale Diamond 240C Centre Speaker
The Wharfedale Diamond 240C is a large centre channel speaker designed to match the Wharfedale Diamond 200 series floor standing speakers.
The name Wharfedale has been synonymous with hifi loudspeakers for around 80 years. In fact the first speakers we ever made at home in the 1950's used Wharfedale drivers! Moving on, Diamond is the most successful speaker series ever to come from Wharfedale, if not one of the most successful hi-fi speaker series in the world. We can justify this as year on year since 1982 the Diamond Series has broken the mould for combining award winning sound quality unforeseen at this price. Since then it has meant one thing – impeccable performance at an affordable price. And the Hi-Fi press has consistently heaped praise on the series for top performance and value for money.
As a result of the over-whelming success of the Diamond 200 Series, and the demand by both us and our customers for a centre channel to better partner the larger floor standing models in the Diamond 200 series, Wharfedale have recently added the Wharfedale Diamond 240C to the line-up. The 240C houses woven Kevlar Cones with improved aesthetics and construction so you get both beauty and performance. The multi-award winning Diamond 200 Series delivers a whole new level of musical detail and transient attack, drawing the listener into the musical performance in a way that is normally only expected from speakers at a considerably higher price level.
Kevlar: Kevlar has been used in the Diamond series for many years and for good reason. Impregnated with a stiffening resin, and then treated with a polymer coat that seals the fibre and adds damping, Kevlar maintains a more constant dispersion pattern at all frequencies in its range than any other cone material. The result? Far fewer delayed, time-smearing sounds, and an exceptionally clean, precise midrange.
The Diamond 240C centre speaker features a total of 4 x 130mm (5") Woven Kevlar Cone (designed and made by Wharfedale), which flank the Wharfedale textile 25mm (1") dome tweeter. Combined with the extra cabinet volume it performs with a claimed lower bass extension of 50Hz. This combined with the greater power handling make the Diamond 240C an excellent companion to the Diamond series floor standing speakers as part of a Wharfedale home theatre speaker system or in fact other brands with similar charachteristics. The enclosure is sealed or in other words doesn't have a port which makes location in a cabinet easy. But it also means that the 240C only has average efficiency at 90dB. This means you need a "beefy" receiver, something with decent output and our recommendation is at least 80 Watts RMS per channel and preferably more. This is higher than what Wharfedale recommend but we base this on (1) experience and (2) typical use of a speaker in this category. Over driving an amplifier leads to distortion and usually damage to the drivers and naturally misuse is not covered by warranty.
