Klipsch RP-502S II Surround Speakers
With its twin Hybrid Tractrix horns and Cerametallic woofers, the RP-502S II rear channel surround speaker is built to effortlessly deliver clear, powerful Klipsch sound and put you right in the middle of the action with exciting cinematic sound.
The Klipsch RP-502S II is part of the Reference Premiere range and delivers clear, crisp, dialogue with outstanding bass. It is a medium sized rear-channel speaker and features two 133mm (5.25") woofers that have Klipsch's distinctive, copper-coloured Cerametallic material. Made with an anodised aluminium, this cone is strong and dent resistant. The anodising process converts its inner and outer surfaces to ceramic. The outcome is a rigid cone with superb damping characteristics that will not flex or resonate at frequencies within the woofer's operating range. The woofers also employ a rubber surround for added durability. When paired with the Tractrix horn-loaded LTS tweeter, it provides the highest speaker efficiency in its class.
With the Reference Premiere Series, Klipsch also gave these woofers a newly developed titanium voice coil former that allows more linear movement for enhanced efficiency, lower distortion, and extended low frequency response. The RP-502S II can handle up to 100 Watts RMS and 400 Watts of peak power.
Wide Dispersion Surround Technology (WDST): They deliver precise sonic detail through the careful positioning of two Tractrix Horn loaded titanium-diaphragm tweeters and two 133mm woofers. By aligning the two horns at 90° with respect to each other, along with the two woofers, the RP-502S smoothly covers a 180° horizontal arc, allowing maximum placement flexibility. This unique Wide Dispersion Surround Technology delivers a new dimension of reality and convenience, and produces a smooth, seamless broad distribution of sound, which is the perfect vehicle for every surround format.
90° X 90° Silicon Composite Hybrid Tractrix Horn: Horn loading maximizes efficiently and increases detail while focusing high frequencies towards the listening area. Proprietary Tractrix® geometry provides the most efficient transfer of high frequency waves into the listening area. The phase plug and compressed moulded silicon face ensure smooth frequency response. When combined, the cleanest, most natural sound possible is created. The second generation increases horn size for a larger soundstage and enhanced directivity.
Linear Travel Suspension (LTS) Titanium Diaphragm Tweeter: The exclusive Linear Travel Suspension minimizes distortion for enhanced, detailed performance. LTS tweeters are a hallmark of previous Reference lines, making it a core component of some of the best speakers in the world.
Vented Tweeter Design: The vented tweeter housing reduces standing waves that create unwanted harmonics, resulting in enhanced detail and clarity in high frequency reproduction.
Cerametallic Woofers – All New Design: A signature feature on the Reference Premiere series, Cerametallic™ woofers are exceptionally rigid and lightweight for minimal distortion and maximum efficiency. New voice coils are 70% larger in diameter resulting in improved power handling and greater cone control for greater linearity and flawless reproduction. New aluminium shorting rings reduce distortion as well as increase power handling and the new motor structure improve transit response with more control with greater speed and accuracy.
New & Improved Connections: Featuring audiophile-grade wire and easily accessible aluminium binding posts for any connection type.
Furniture Grade Materials & Finishes: Finishes include ebony vinyl and walnut vinyl that boast satin painted baffles with a scratch resistant finish.
Strong, Flexible, Removable Grille: Attaches magnetically for an elegant transition from powerful showstopper to discrete performance piece.
Placement: In a typical 5.1 or 7.1 channel system they can be mounted on side or rear walls. It is recommended that they be mounted above the ear height of seated listeners (between 1,500mm and 1,800mm above the floor). They include a single keyhole slot on the back of the cabinet for wall-mounting the speaker without any additional wall-mount bracket but you have to provide the mounting screws because they are not supplied. Weighing just over 7kg each you will need to make sure you mount them securely and use a stud for your screw.
Our Take On The Klipsch RP-502S II Surround Speakers
Klipsch speakers deliver a dynamic and fast sound which is just the thing to impress on movies. But there is another big story to tell and that is the subject of sensitivity or speaker efficiency. Most speakers are about 90dB efficiency and in stereo mode and with a modest approach to the volume control does not present any problem for any good amplifier or home theatre receiver. However as surround sound has increased from 5 speakers up to 9 or even 11, so has the demand on the amplifier or home theatre receiver. Combine more speakers with more volume and average efficiency speakers (say 90dB) and your amplifier will run quite hot and go into clipping - a type of distortion.
One solution is to add an extra power amplifier to hook up the front two or three speakers and leave the receiver to run the centre and rear effects speakers. Another solution is to invest in a speakers like the Klipsch RP-502S II. These rear speakers are a very efficient 94dB which means you can easily run it with half the power of most other speakers and ideally it should be matched with other Klipsch speakers from the Reference Premiere range. One of the better spec receivers will usually do the job beautifully and run nice and 'cool' even at high output levels. Speak with us to get more details or phone in and arrange a demo.
