About The Marantz MM8077 Power Amplifier

Designed for the ultimate music and movie surround sound experience, the Marantz MM8077 7-channel power amplifier delivers power and detail, and is rated at 150 watts per channel into 8 ohms, and 180 watts per channel into 6 ohms.

The overall quality of your entertainment system's sound is extremely dependent on the power amplifier section and that is whether it is a small integrated amplifier or a large power amplifier like the MM8077. It is not simply a matter of the more Watts the better because your speakers are like a heavy train going up a hill - it doesn't just need more power, but more clean and controlled power. Likewise, the power amplifier section needs to deliver sufficient quantities of clean, instantly available power on demand. So there must be enough clean power that is available in an instant when you turn up the volume of when a dynamic passage demands it and especially so with today's movie soundtracks. So how does the Marantz MM8077 measure up?

7-Channel Power Amplifier

The Marantz MM8077 seven-channel power amplifier delivers power and detail, and is rated at 150 Watts (into 8 Ohms, at 20Hz-20kHz with 0.08%, driving 2 channels)  and 180 Watts (into 6 Ohms, at 20Hz-20kHz with 0.08%, driving 2 channels). The MM8077 power amp matches perfectly with the Marantz AV-8802 or AV-7703 home theatre preamp/processors (sold separately). The power supply features a high current toroidal power transformer along with high power (71WVDC) filter capacitors with a total 100,000µF capacitance to easily handle sharp short-term transient peaks. Featuring Marantz' unique current feedback discrete power amp output stages that are identical for all channels, the MM8077 is equipped with multiple high current discrete power transistors that feature high slew rate and wide operating bandwidth to extract the most detail from today's high resolution audio formats.

The output devices are mounted on a dual extruded aluminum alloy heat sink assembly, configured in a tunnel arrangement that provides both passive and active cooling and the assembly is book-ended with a whisper quiet fan that automatically kicks in to provide near silent active cooling when the soundtrack heats up. As the fan is mounted internally directly to the heat sinks (and not externally to the chassis cover as is often the case) even when it's running, it's designed to be whisper quiet. The copper-plated chassis provides isolation from extraneous noise, and features a multi-layer reinforced bottom panel assembly for maximum rigidity along with triple-layer top cover. Elegantly finished in anodized black satin, the MM8077 features the classic Marantz ringed porthole display with a blue illumination accent that includes a display on/off function.

Other Features

For maximum connectivity, the MM8077 features both unbalanced (RCA) and balanced (XLR) inputs, and each amp channel can be configured to use your choice of input connector. The loudspeaker terminals feature audiophile-grade construction, and are gold-plated for maximum signal transfer, and they can easily handle a wide range of audiophile speaker cable connectors.

Binding Post Speaker Terminals: The Marantz MM8077 is fitted with seven pair of binding-post speaker terminals. The binding-post terminals feature audiophile-grade construction, and are gold-plated for maximum signal transfer, and they can easily handle a wide range of audiophile speaker cable connectors (such as bar wire, single banana plugs, and pin-connectors).

DC Control: The MM8077 features DC trigger input/outputs (3.5mm) for external power on/off control. The DC trigger input allows the MM8077's power to be controlled by another device (5-15V). The DC Trigger output allows the MM8077 to control the power of another compatible device (12V/44mA).

Remote Power Control: Dual RC-5 remote control in/out RCA jacks allow for connection to a compatible Marantz components. When a compatible Marantz preamp is connected, this unit's power can be switched on and off simultaneously with the preamp. The RC-5 input is connected to the preamp, and the RC-5 output can be connected to other compatible Marantz components; CD player, DVD player, Tuner, etc.

Auto-Standby Mode: The MM8077 automatically switches to standby mode when there has been no signal for approximately 30 minutes. This prevents power from being wasted whenever you forget to turn the power off.
