There are dozens if not hundreds of In-Wall and In-Ceiling speaker brands on the market. In fact, if you order enough, the Asian manufacturers will put any name you like on them! Don't laugh, because it is actually happening and boy are they cheap...but also nasty - real nasty! Please, don't be fooled by the look and conclude it is all one big con and that they're all basically the same.
The good news is that you can now buy in-wall speakers that are made with integrity, are fairly priced and actually deliver very good sound. Canadian Speaker giant Paradigm is proof - everything they put their name to is designed in house including their in-wall and in-ceiling products which although mostly unseen could be referred to as "buried treasures."
Awesome Performance
The CI Elite series is crafted in Canada and has all the technology advantages and grille aesthetics of the CI PRO series with bonus oversized voice coils and X-PAL pure aluminium cone technology for the ultimate in sound performance.
The E5-LCR is the middle child of the LCR speakers in the Elite range and features two 165mm (6.5") mid/Bass Driver plus a 25mm (1") X-PAL Dome Tweeter and two 165mm (6.5") low frequency or passive drivers which use the 'back' energy from the main drivers to add more depth to the sound. With a 94dB SPL they are very easy to drive and can be used with amplifiers with up to 220 Watts RMS output, although please remember that maximum input is set at 150 Watts. More power in reserve is the smart move because it is distortion that 'cooks' speakers. They are compatible with 8 Ohms and have a pretty impressive frequency response of between 93 Hz and 18 kHz. Grilles are micro-perf and attached or held in place by neodymium magnets rather than the old way of forcing them into a narrow bezel or slot. This makes the entire installation process very quick.
Superior Tweeter Technology: Advanced high-power X-PAL satin-anodised pure-aluminium dome tweeters are nicely built-in. The X-PAL tweeter with exclusive Perforated Phase-aligning (PPA) tweeter lens protects the delicate pure-aluminium tweeter dome and acts as the Phase Plug, blocking out-of-phase frequencies for smoother, extended high frequencies with incredible detail and higher output. The tweeter is cooled by Paradigm's patent pending RED die-cast aluminium housing and the original ultra-stable Ferrofluid, made exclusively by Ferrotec.
RED Technology: Reduced Edge Diffraction (RED) Technology (patent pending) has been developed in-house by Paradigm. What is it? RED technology is a die-cast aluminium tweeter housing that significantly reduces negative effects of diffraction while improving critical midrange frequencies. The irregular edges and off-centre placement break up standing waves typically found around the bass cone and tweeter housing of traditional designs. Additionally, the aluminium structure dissipates unwanted heat which increases power handling and allows a lower crossover frequency, improving sound and reducing distortion.
Bass/Mid Cones: The advanced high-power co-polymer polypropylene bass/mid cones have large, computer-optimised magnets and high-power motor structures that promote natural and detailed sonic reproduction with outstanding extended bass response. Mineral-filled polypropylene cones with patented Active Ridge Technology (ART) surrounds, made in-house and overmolded directly onto each cone, achieve greater excursion for a 3dB gain in distortion-free output (50% greater) compared to drivers with standard surrounds. New X-PAL brushed pure-aluminium cone woofers combine lightweight stiffness with high consistency for a greater degree of accuracy and smooth, uncoloured frequency response. Matching concave dust caps ensuring more uniform dynamic response and a cleaner, modern aesthetic. Finally, the supremely rigid die-cast structure reduces resonances and standing waves, while the aluminium does double-duty as a heatsink. The high-strength glass-reinforced injection-moulded polymer chassis design reduces the problems of vibrations and resonances.
Voice Coil: Paradigm have squeezed in an oversized 38mm (1.5") high-power handling voice coil motor structure. This dramatically increases the maximum output level and reduces power compression.
Rear Component Shielding: This protects internal parts from debris in your ceiling - bits of ceiling insulation and dust. The translucent polycarbonate material creates an installation that will not warp. Flat covers also make it easy to lie speakers down during the installation process without tipping.
Premium-grade components: Includes high-power rated resistors, capacitors and heavy gauge wire inductors. Nickel-plated, spring loaded binding posts feature a larger wire hole to accept higher-gauge wire or banana plugs
