About The SVS SB-1000 Classic Subwoofer
Search the web and you'll read a lot of very favourable reviews on SVS Subwoofers. And there is a reason. Nice clear, powerful and exciting sounding bass that can keep up with both music and movies in a small to medium set up. Finding a sweet spot for it is easier than many due to it's compact size.
SVS was founded in 1998 by a group of audio enthusiasts seeking to develop a better alternative to the under-performing and over-priced subwoofers of that time and refute the notion that exceptional sound quality has to be ridiculously expensive. The SVS design approach involves a fusion of leading edge technology, precision engineering, exhaustive lab and real-world testing, as well as, a deep personal passion for audio excellence, all brought to life by their team of acoustic engineers. By using the highest quality components, the SVS team has developed a line of high-performance, high-value audio subwoofers that bring music and movies to life with stunning realism. The SVS SB-1000 uses the same tried and tested 300 Watt amp as the PB-1000 but increases the woofer size to a 300mm monster and uses a sealed enclosure.
Look at the Audio Trends range of subwoofers and you'll see we love bass - especially deep, accurate bass that rocks the house and adds intense realism to our movies, music, and video games. But that kind of low-end performance can cost heaps unless you have deep pockets. So we're always on the lookout for subs that deliver the kind of performance we crave at a price we can afford and the SVS SB-1000 answers the call.
300mm High Output Woofer: The front-firing 300mm (12") high output woofer pumps out deep and powerful bass with low distortion, for smooth and accurate performance on music and movies soundtracks. The woofer features a lightweight cone for enhanced sensitivity and transient response, a long-throw suspension for high output at low frequencies, plus a rubber surround for durability and long-life. It also incorporates FEA-optimised motor technology for low distortion, high-power voice coil for excellent thermal management, and vented pole piece for greater cooling.
STA-300D Sledge Amplifier: The SB-1000 employs a Sledge STA-300D amplifier with efficient and cool-running Class D topology. The amplifier is conservatively rated at 300 Watts RMS and 720 Watts Peak and features a highly advanced DSP processor offering unmatched control over the subwoofer at all volume levels, for distortion free bass.
Variable Controls: The SB-1000 subwoofer has simple and straightforward control options that make integrating the subwoofer into your listening environment an easy task. The control knobs are actually digital actuators for precise and noise-free adjustment.
- Volume Control: The Volume Control (Min/Max) affects how loud the subwoofer plays. It should be adjusted to match the output level of your loudspeakers.
- Low Pass Crossover: This Low Pass Crossover affects the upper frequency limit of the powered sub. The control range is 50-160Hz, along with a "LFE" (disabled) setting. The slope of the low pass crossover is 12 dB/octave. For connection to a home theatre receiver, the low pass should be set to "LFE" (disabled). For stereo receiver, it should be adjusted to blend with the natural roll-off frequency of your loudspeakers.
- Phase Control: The Phase Control (0-180°) delays the signal being processed through the amplifier. It should be adjusted to obtain the most coherent and stable soundstage and transition between your loudspeakers and the powered subwoofer.
Placement Options: Although subwoofers can be placed at the side or back of your room, it is best if possible to place it at the front so it will 'blend' with your front and centre loudspeakers.
- Corner Placement: Corner placement will accommodate most rooms and will reduce the chances for encountering a null (an acoustic cancellation in the bass response) at the listening position. If your AV receiver equalises the subwoofer channel during auto-set-up, corner placement will often provide the best overall performance.
- Other Placement Options: If corner placement sound excessively boomy, then try moving the subwoofer to other available locations along the front stage, listening for the best balance of output and a smooth accurate response. Important! Always redo the auto-set-up of your home theatre receiver after moving the subwoofer to a different location to ensure the acoustic distance and calibration level are set correctly.
- Dual Subs: To maximise the bass output and impact of your home theatre, two SB-1000s can be paired; one on either side of your room. This is no sales push! It really works.
Auto/Standby & On Switch: If this switch is set to "Auto/Standby", it will automatically turn-on the powered subwoofer in the presence of an audio signal. If no signal is present for a period of several minutes, the powered subwoofer will enter "Standby" mode, where power consumption will be less than 0.5 Watts. If this switch is set to "On", the amplifier will remain on continuously and will not enter "Standby" mode.
Problems With Vibrations From Your Subwoofer? Try This: To isolate your subwoofer from the floor and provide improved bass performance while reducing floor and wall vibrations, noise artefacts and complaints from neighbours or roommates, choose the SVS SoundPath Subwoofer Isolation System (4 Pack).
SVS SB-1000 Classic Reviews
"It reached the deepest notes with ease, and was very crisp and clear the whole time. Did I mention it was smooth? It was oh so smooth." - Home Theater Shack

Our Take On The SVS SB-1000 Classic Subwoofer
The SB-1000 Classic delivers fast, tight, and accurate bass. It will dramatically improve your system's sound stage to the point where a blindfolded listener could be excused for thinking that you're running a systen of hundreds of Watts (RMS) through huge floor-standing speakers. Sonic performance is superb and very linear. It proportionally delivers strong bass, saving one from the hassle of having to fiddle with gain at low or high volumes. The form factor of the SB-1000 is still compact despite the fact it has a huge 300mm driver and we would highly recommend it for apartments and medium sized rooms. It definitely delivers 'bang for the buck' making it a wise choice for both those new to subwoofers or upgrading with a definite limit on investment.
