About The Yamaha A-S301 Stereo Amplifier

When reviewing the Yamaha A-S301 stereo amplifier, we were happy to see that it maintains the same high construction standards that we see on Yamaha's more expensive models. The Yamaha A-S301 offers the complete package for the entry level listener.

A stand-alone dedicated amplifier is ideal for those wanting to listen to quality 2 channel audio from a multitude of sources, including digital. This stereo amp has digital inputs! You can plug your computer, TV, or other digital output directly into this amp without the need for a DAC because it has one built right inside which eliminates more wires and mess. Power output is rated at a continuous, full-bandwidth 60 Watts per channel with very low distortion specs.

The new range of Yamaha integrated amplifiers are designed as descendants of the famous A-S2000. An aluminium front panel, silky touch volume/selector knobs and Yamaha's strong commitment to quality craftsmanship are just some of the benefits from this range. The Yamaha A-S301 is a classic-style stereo amplifier with a few simple improvements that are sure to please. Yes, you'll get 60 rock-solid Watts per channel to drive your favourite speakers. And you'll get the audio inputs you expect to connect a turntable, a tape deck, and more. But you'll also have an input for an optional dock for your iPod® or iPhone®. There's even a line-level output so you can add a subwoofer.

The A-S301 may seem to be just a low-priced model, but it is packed full with a host of features that make it ideal for those who want a lot of connectivity but don't need to rock the neighbourhood! In other words it is a good choice for smaller rooms where massive volume is not necessary.

ToP-ART Design and ART Base Ensure Optimum Sound: When processing and transmission of the audio signal is simple and direct there is less chance of it being affected by noise and distortion. Yamaha's amplifier design technology called ToP-ART features an I/O (input to output) Direct Symmetrical Design, with left and right channels organised in a straight, symmetrical layout for highest signal purity. In addition, the ART (Anti-Resonance and Tough) Base bottom chassis and a solid centre bar provide high-rigidity support and vibration damping. These Yamaha design innovations contribute to this amplifiers' rich audio reproduction with abundant musicality.

Connectivity: The A-S301 is equipped with five analogue stereo (RCA) inputs for connecting external analogue audio sources, including a CD player. The Phono input can be used to connect a turntable with an MM phono cartridge to play vinyl records. The unit's Phono input also features a ground terminal which should be used to reduce any hum.

Optical & Coaxial Digital Inputs: With hi-fi systems being asked to handle more and more digital sources, Yamaha has equipped the A-S301 to cope with ease. It is equipped with both optical (Toslink) and coaxial (RCA) digital audio inputs. The optical and coaxial inputs will accept 2 channel PCM (not Dolby Digital/DTS). The audio stays in the digital domain, giving you pure, pristine dynamic sound for all your entertainment sources, from sports and other programs to movies and concerts. So go ahead, connect up your TV, CD player or other source with digital output.

A and B Speakers: All Yamaha integrated amplifiers have speaker A & B option. This allows music sources to be played in two difference areas of the house, adding versatility to these accomplished amplifiers. Naturally you need two pair of compatible speakers and wire! Note: We wouldn't recommend the cable connecting the second pair of speakers be any further than 12 metres long.

Pure Direct: Pure Direct uses the shortest possible signal route for higher quality sound purity with minimal electrical noise and transmission losses. This function is ideal for listening to CDs.

Subwoofer Output: Have a difficult room? Small speakers? Love bass? If you need to hook a sub up to the system, the A-S301 makes it simple with a mono summed subwoofer output. That means that pretty much any sub that is self powered will work. If you're not sure, give us a call and we can advise.

Our Take On The Yamaha A-S301 Stereo Amplifier

The current range of Yamaha integrated amplifiers are designed as descendants of the famous A-S2000 with Yamaha's strong commitment to quality craftsmanship being just some of the benefits. Further more, it is clear that they are taking advantage of the lessons learned in the professional space - Yamaha build some of the best digital mixing desks money can buy! The Yamaha A-S301 Stereo Amp has been designed with two primary goals in mind. First is the music listener and second, those on a tight budget. Weighing 9 kg, the A-S301 has plenty of the necessaries to power a range of speakers typical for its power output and perceived room area which would presumed to be of the smaller variety. Having said that, we have plenty of suitable speakers to make the A-S301 sing its little head off so-to-speak! See below for some recommendations.

However the sound, although the main event, is just one part of the puzzle. You will find the traditional knobs - but in a retro kind of style - to control volume, bass, treble and balance. The brushed aluminium retro styling ensures they will match Yamaha's CD/Blu-ray players for a system that looks as good as it sounds. Weighing 9 kg, the A-S301 has plenty of the necessaries to power a wide-range of speakers. However, it is its digital inputs and subwoofer output - as well as the very nice build quality - that are the real standouts. If you have a small room and the right speakers it will deliver an honest return for the investment.
